REEF Tropical Western Atlantic database, February 2020, Turks and Caicos

The dataset includes all species and abundance surveys from Turks and Caicos in the REEF Tropical Western Atlantic (TWA) database between 1994-2020. The database is comprising data about survey site, water and site physical condition, habitat and species recorded. It contains also metrics for every survey: presence/absence of the species, sighting frequency, density score and abundance score. The data is stored in form of csv files and shapefile.

Lineage Data were collected during REEF Volunteer Fish Survey Project allowing volunteer scuba divers and snorkelers to collect and report information on marine fish population as well as selected invertebrate and algae species in temperate and tropical reef areas. The data are collected by different volunters and separated into two categories based on experience level: novice and expert divers. After collection the data is quality checked and loaded into the REEF database. The metrics used in the database are calculated as: Percent sighting frequency (%SF) for each species is the percentage of all dives in which the species was recorded. Density score (D) for each species is a weighted average index based on the frequency of observations in different abundance categories. Density score is calculated as: D= ((nSx1)+(nFx2)+(nMx3)+(nAx4)) / (nS + nF + nM + nA), where nS, nF, nM, and nA represented the number of times each abundance category (Single, Few, Many, Abundant) was assigned for a given species. Values range from 1 to 4. Abundance Score is an estimate of abundance that accounts for non-sightings and is calculated as D x %SF, values range from 0 to 4
