Lineage | Surveys for shorebirds and all other birds were conducted by a team of trained observers consistent over the period. Surveys for Piping Plover were conducted at high to mid tide where possible over the period. Survey sites were replicated each year with additional areas targeted in following years with survey replications in following years. A 100% survey of the beach, mudflat, tidal flats, or similar habitat was attempted in each survey for target species. Observations of non-target species were primarily incidental to surveys and recorded for adding to avian data for TCI. Every effort was made to get good counts but the numbers are minimum estimates. Survey team members are highly qualifted observers in identification of birds, primarily target species of shorebirds. From the first year through the last year, all areas were surveyed annually in the winter at high to mid tide for target species, and an absolute count of all species was attempted. Additions to surveys sites each year were replicated in following years by the survey team. However, detection probability on any single survey is often less than 100%, and therefore some sites were visited multiple times. Likewise, all counts are minimum estimates and a zero count or a site lacking survey data may still be a site that is used by birds (i.e. our data should not be used to confirm absence). |
