The Turks and Caicos Islands Terrestrial Habitat Map (2011)

The dataset comprises the distribution of each vegetative community habitat class, sub-class and formation represented and mappable in the Turks and Caicos Islands. The DECR, Ministry of Natural Resources, and the Turks and Caicos Government (TCIG), financed by the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC), contracted a series of habitat classification maps for the Turks and Caicos Islands. The project was finalized in 2011.

Lineage Technically it is the projected vectorization of the most current of geo-rectified 1:5 000 scale raster aerial images, provided by the DECR. The land-cover analysis and vectorization was conducted by Blue Dolphin Research and Consulting, 03.2009-08.2010. Observable changes in land-cover were identified, delineated, and attributed, manually using ESRI ArcGIS 9.3.1 software. Ancillary data, local expertise and ground truthing expeditions were used to distinguish and characterize each land-cover set as much as possible within the resource limitations of this project. Each land-cover type was assigned a classification number based on a National Standardized Vegetation Classification created by Kathleen McNary Wood in consort with this project.
