Species distribution models for important species in the Turks and Caicos Islands

The dataset comprises a series of species distribution models for important marine species in the Turks and Caicos Islands. For now, models for the following species are available: Caribbean Spiny Lobster, Great Barracuda, Nassau Grouper, Yellowtail Snapper.

Lineage Species distribution modelling was performed using maximum entropy alghorythm from Maxent software. The species presence data were derived from species distribution grids with the resolution of 1 km. The species presence information was stored in a binary system which mean every grid cell had only value=1 when the species is present and value=0 when there is no infromation about the species presence. Other information like abundance, frequency, densities of species were omitted. The species distribution data originated from various databases including GBIF, REEF, AGRRA, DECR. Environmental layers used for modelling were extracted from the Nature Conservancy Benthic Habitat Map. Every variable was calulcated as a percentage of it in 1km2 grid cell. Each environmental layer was tested against significance for particular species using the Kruskal–Wallis test. The Maxent model was constructed using default parameters. Records were splited into training (70%) and test (30%) and the number of background points was arbitraly set to 3 times more that number of records.
